FORTUM

Fortum is a Nordic energy company, one of the cleanest energy producers in Europe. 97% of electricity produced by Fortum is free of CO2 emission. In Poland, the company has been operating for 20 years mainly in of district heating – production and distribution of heat, but not only. Fortum is also a seller of electricity and gas both to business and individual customers. Fortum’s updated strategy focuses on delivering clean energy, successfully decarbonizing its own assets and driving a shift away from coal in industry.
Fortum uses cogeneration technology in heat production, owns and co-owns nuclear power plants, and invests in wind, solar and hydroelectric power. In Poland, Fortum supplies more than 100,000 customers with electricity and gas. District heating networks owned by Fortum in Poland are located in Wrocław, Częstochowa and Płock. They total more than 940 km of networks, serving about 360,000 households. The longest of them, reaching the length of 590 km, is located in Wroclaw.
In March 2023, Fortum published a new strategy in which it pledged to achieve climate neutrality by 2030. To this end, it will decarbonize its units by 2027. Combined heat and power plants in Zabrze and Częstochowa will fully abandon coal combustion.
Fortum is actively exploring innovative solutions in the field of heat recovery methods. A large-scale system heat pump project called “Wrompa” is underway in Wroclaw, which will enable the extraction of environmentally friendly heat from wastewater. Once operational in 2024, the pump will supply up to 5 percent of the annual demand of the city’s district heating customers. At the same time, Fortum in Wroclaw is running a test project to manage waste heat generated in data processing and feed it into the district heating network.
Another project bringing Fortum closer to decarbonization is the production of its own RDF alternative fuel, which is produced from residual waste left over from the sorting process. Thanks to the investment, Fortum will gain control over the quality and calorific value of the fuel, which will eventually go to the Zabrze Combined Heat and Power Plant.
Through continuous development and transformation of the organization, Fortum can help customers develop and decarbonize their processes in a reliable and cost-effective way in harmony with nature.
Fortum’s presence at the Ninth Energy Congress will strengthen the discussion on the path of transformation of Poland’s district heating industry and innovative solutions in heat production, as well as provide an opportunity to exchange Polish-Finnish experiences in clean energy implementation.
